The Leonard Phillips Foundation, Inc. was established in 2009, one year after the untimely death of injured motorcyclist Leonard Phillips.
The Leonard Phillips Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit, registered 501(c)(3) organization, established to provide financial assistance to motorcyclists who have been physically injured while riding.
We rely on our volunteers to fulfill our mission and to help us make a difference in the lives of the members in our community.
In today’s fast-paced world, staying connected has become second nature. Whether it’s checking a notification, responding to a text, or scrolling through social media, distractions are everywhere. But when you’re behind the wheel, even a brief moment of distraction can have life-altering consequences.
At The Leonard Phillips Foundation, we are committed to educating and empowering young drivers to make safe, responsible decisions—and distracted driving remains one of the most critical issues we face today.
Distracted driving is any activity that takes your attention away from driving. It falls into three main categories:
Texting while driving is especially dangerous because it involves all three.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for individuals ages 16–24. Young drivers are particularly at risk due to limited experience and increased exposure to distractions such as:
According to national data, reading or sending a text takes your eyes off the road for about 5 seconds—that’s like driving the length of a football field blindfolded at 55 mph.
Distracted driving doesn’t just increase the risk of a crash—it can lead to:
These are not just statistics—these are real lives, real families, and real futures impacted every day.
The good news is that distracted driving is 100% preventable. Here are simple steps every driver can take:
✔️ Put your phone on “Do Not Disturb” while driving
✔️ Set your GPS and music before you start driving
✔️ Speak up if you’re a passenger and the driver is distracted
✔️ Avoid eating, texting, or multitasking behind the wheel
✔️ Stay focused—your life and others depend on it
Programs like Alive at 25® are designed to go beyond basic driver education. They equip young drivers with the tools to recognize risky behaviors, understand consequences, and make safer choices.
Through interactive learning and real-world scenarios, participants gain the confidence and awareness needed to navigate today’s driving environment responsibly.
At The Leonard Phillips Foundation, we believe that education saves lives. By addressing distracted driving head-on, we are working to create safer roads, stronger communities, and a generation of drivers who understand the responsibility that comes with getting behind the wheel.
